They did their thing and thrived on gratitude before a pay check. It's tough. You gotta pay bills and what not but your chosen profession does not generally reward hard work and clever marketing. Just do what you do and they will find you if the talent demands. You can be (billionaire) Taylor Swift or (broke) Miles Davis. What's important? Both are recognised and cherished in the music world.
