October is the dreamiest month in upstate New York, and along with it comes a slew of performances that I’m involved with and care about deeply. See below for more info on those. My next interview — with Anthony Cubbage — will be coming to your inboxes next week. In our conversation we talked about how he’s dealt with anxiety, dropping out of college, and his desire to experience more daylight. Keep your eyes open for that, plus a special extra edition coming later this month with Troy, NY mayoral candidate Nina Nichols (in which we talk about music).
Upcoming Shows in New York
Kaleidescape
Saturday, Oct. 14, 6:00 PM
Troy Savings Bank Music Hall (Troy, NY)
Tickets
I’m not sure I have the words for how excited I am about this event, and how special it will be. Sam Torres and I, with support from the team at Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, have been dreaming up this event for over a year. It features an incredible array of local talent from the New York Capital Region. Each group will be premiering new material, inspired by the acoustical wonder that is the Troy Music Hall. We’ll be making full use of the space, with musicians in all corners (shhhh it’s a surprise). Tying it all together is a commissioned work by composer Patrick Burke, which I’ll be performing on. He’s written haunting interludes for in between each set, as well as an achingly beautiful final piece.
If you’re in the area, don’t miss it!
Troy Listening Room
Saturday, Oct. 7, 7:00 PM
South Troy, NY
My husband and I host monthly shows in our perfectly strange church-ish home in Troy, NY. We lucked into a beautiful acoustic in this space, and the shows here are so much fun. Let me know if you’d like to attend or if you’d like to get on the dedicated email list for these concerts.
Our upcoming show features Zan Strumfeld of Zan and the Winter Folk and Matthew Fowler. Acoustic, folky, lovely.
Paintbrush Charlie
Paintbrush Charlie, a band that I play in led by Julia Alsarraf, is playing two community events this month —

I went to two fabulous concerts back to back last weekend — Jungle at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, and Half Waif in the Beatrix Farrand Garden at FDR’s estate in Hyde Park, NY. Two very different experiences, both life-affirming in their own way. I danced the night away at Jungle with thousands of other people in a former tennis stadium, and then quietly listened to the insects accompany Half Waif the next afternoon. If you’re not familiar with either of these artists, check them out right away.
