When I was a young girl, I idolized pianists like the Labèque sisters and Martha Argerich. They always had amazing hair and played with the most fiery I’m-a-badass attitude. I wanted to be them when I grew up.
Mythology swirled around these pianists for me: mythologies that included their numerous romantic entanglements, seemingly larger-than-life personalities, and so much more. The bigger the hair, the better. And of course they were(are) unreal musicians. I was fascinated.
Part of this famous-pianists-mythology included vague stories of bringing their own pianos to concerts. Bringing their own piano! My young brain exploded at the thought. If one had reached a stage in their career when they were traveling with their own piano — we’re talking about a concert grand that weighs over 1,000 pounds and requires a team of highly-trained professionals to move — surely these pianists had arrived. Gosh, they were so cool.
Fast forward 25ish years.
Sweet readers— I have a new piano that I will be traveling with and bringing to concerts. 😭
While it may not be a 1,000-pound concert grand like in the Great Myths, the arrival of my tiny traveling upright has been one of the single most exciting developments in my musical career. .
I truly can’t express just how much it means to me to be able to hone the sound of this instrument with Sam Torres (who mixes my shows). Knowing that we’ll be taking this exact piano into a venue feels life-changing in so many ways, not least of which is because I’ll be able to get deeper and deeper into the sound worlds of my music. There is so much more to come.
I could cry.
Here’s a little taste to give you an idea:
You can hear it in action on September 13 at Round Lake Auditorium, a gorgeous historic venue!
(Now I just need to work on my hair.)

That song in the video really moved me - is it recorded somewhere and can I find it? Is the midi controller connected to a computer or is that an in built bass sound? Love your set up.
I love it--sounds & looks amazing~
